Ghana Entry Visa Requirements

General Requirements

To apply for a Ghana entry visa, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be legally resident in the country where the Ghana Mission is located.
  • Passport photographs must have been taken within the last three (3) months prior to submission.
  • A copy of the return ticket and/or travel itinerary must be attached.
  • An International Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever is required.
  • The passport must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond the intended date of entry.

Business Visa Requirements

  • In addition to the general requirements, applicants seeking a Business Visa must provide:

    • A letter from their employer or organisation in the country of application, stating the purpose of the visit.
    • A letter of invitation from the applicant’s business associate(s) or partner(s) in Ghana.

References

Applicants are required to provide at least one local reference in Ghana. Acceptable references include:

  • The address of business associates
  • The address of the hotel or lodge where the applicant will stay
  • The address of an educational institution in Ghana

Visa Exemptions

The following categories of travellers are exempt from obtaining a visa prior to entry:

  • Nationals of ECOWAS member states and select African countries.
  • Citizens of African Union member states (who are not ECOWAS nationals) may apply for a visa on arrival, subject to payment of the applicable fee.
  • Holders of diplomatic or service passports from specific countries, as well as official passport holders from recognised international organisations and agencies listed in Ghana’s visa regime.
  • Travellers in direct airside transit through Ghana.

Visa on Arrival

The Ghana Immigration Service operates a Visa on Arrival policy for travellers and business visitors who must travel at short notice from countries where Ghana has no diplomatic mission or consulate.

Visas may be issued upon arrival at designated entry points, subject to the fulfilment of immigration procedures and requirements.

Ghana’s Diplomatic Missions

Ghana maintains a strong global diplomatic presence with:

  • 55 Embassies, High Commissions, and Consulates General
  • 59 Honorary Consulates supporting official missions
    Additionally, several Ghanaian Missions are concurrently accredited to countries where Ghana does not have a permanent diplomatic presence.

Visitors intending to stay more than 30 consecutive days must apply for a visa in advance through a Ghanaian embassy.

Countries Which Require a Visa

Citizens of all other countries must obtain an embassy visa prior to travel.
Applicants are advised to make an appointment at least 2 weeks before their intended arrival, as processing may take several weeks.

Afghanistan, Albania, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, United States, and many others.
